Last week we covered our top 3 necessary characteristics of good smart home design. When we talk about amazing smart home design, we mean that certain products meet guidelines for the successful marriage of technology and design. Often, products miss the mark. If a product represents great smart home design, it should:
1. Be Usable
Design is not only about the physical form and beauty of the object. It’s also about how well the technology and physical device work together. Is it simple to use? Does it solve a problem for the user, or not? Connected products should never just be smart for the sake of it — but should provide real value to the user.
2. Fade Into The Background
When it comes to the home, technology should fade into the background — not demand our attention. A number of studies have noted how the attention grabbing quality of technology has incredibly negative health impacts. The best smart home design allows you to focus on the things that matter.
3. Be Built To Last
When you select the objects that go into your home — you expect them to last. Smart home devices should be no different. Good design is great not only because it’s usable, but because it’s also timeless. When it comes to smart home, we should have the same expectations that the products we buy will last for years — not just until the next software release.
Since these three factors are massively important to the future of smart home — we wanted to highlight five of our favorite smart home companies fulfilling these factors and are making products we love:
